Cheyenne River Tribal Land--Eagle Butte, South Dakota
This summer, Trinity students and faculty will spend a week living, working, playing with and learning from a community of Lakota people living on Cheyenne River tribal land. Guided by our partners at Simply Smiles
, who over the last eight years have cultivated a relationship of mutual respect and trust with the community, we will be helping hands for necessary repair, renovation and building projects requested by families in need. We will also spend every afternoon helping out at the program’s summer camp, which brings kids from ages five to fifteen out of their houses and onto the basketball court, the greenhouse, the makeshift art studio, and the playground--all places where learning and fun can bring people together. Our accommodations will be simple and basic during this week. We will sleep in the newly constructed Simply Smiles volunteer bunkhouse, and learn how amazing it is to wash up and brush our teeth as we watch the sun rise and later as the sky lights up with stars. When our work is completed, we will head to Pine Ridge Tribal Land, where we will learn about the robust activism of local community organizers and keepers of history. We will make a pilgrimage to the Wounded Knee sacred site. Our hope is that in preparing for and experiencing all this, our students will come to understand the long and complicated relationship between the US Federal Government and the people indigenous to this land we call the United States. Our students will see how law, political and economic policy, and educational and religious institutions have historically circumscribed the land and lives of these people--and still do, as we’ve seen most recently at Standing Rock. And most importantly, we will see how these communities work to resist these forces and restore meaning to the word “sovereignty.”
You must be fifteen years old at time of travel to participate in this trip.
