Sacred Geometry In Japan

Sacred Geometry In Japan

Students will study sangaku- sacred geometry problems- artistically presented on wooden tablets at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples throughout Japan. With sangaku as our starting point, we'll spend our trip considering how math and geometry permeate both urban and natural landscapes as we visit temples, art museums, math classes in a local school, and the famed Arashiyama bamboo forest. As we travel through Tokyo, Ogaki City, Kyoto, and the countryside, we'll have opportunities for deep cross-cultural exchange and many moments for meditation and mindful reflection.
Our journey to Japan will give us the extraordinary experience of exploring this beautiful country through the lens of mathematics--a language and ritual that crosses the boundaries of time and space.
